In May of 1846 and as a result of the embargo imposed
to Barcelona by the Carlist army during the "Mariner's Revolution" the
city suffered a great lack of salt which put the it into peril..
A well known business man from Barcelona had a very original idea. He gathered
the most remarkable sailors in Barcelona at that time and explained them his
project. More than a project, that business man's idea represented a defiant for
all those sailors. That man had decided to pay for the services of
transportation of salt from the Pitiusas' Salt mines to El Garraf
(Barcelona). What it made of that task a challenge was the fact that the payment
would be done according to the arrival order. The first ones to arrive would be
paid in gold, but the last ones would not be even able to pay their sailor's
wages.
Thirteen boats accepted the defiant. The first to arrive was the "Maltese
Falcon" a 32 meter long schooner from Baltimore skippered by the Greek Andreas
Portus. In second and third place arrived the fishing smack "Jerba" and
the brigantine "Arrogante", respectively.
In this regatta take part all kind of sailing boats. You can find in this competition from sailing boats especially built for regattas to sailing boats for family charters. The purpose for many participants in this regatta is gaining experience in sailing under the supervision of a profesional board devoted to the sailing events for many years.
Chartering a sailing boat to participate in this event will give you a unique chance for learning or widening your experience in sailing. The regatta as such will be your best trainer.
